Pretty Functional

For four years of a full-scale war, living and surviving have stopped being separate things in Ukraine. Once a choice between two opposites – now simply one thing. Pretty Functional starts there, from that learned simultaneity.

We took buckles and straps – functional by nature – and let beauty move in without asking function to leave. Pockets multiply until some of them stop being real. A skirt made entirely of fastex and beads – hard instead of soft, clicking instead of draping. 

Pretty Functional doesn't resolve the tension between function and beauty – it just points out that the tension was never really there. They've been living together the whole time, we just had a very specific place to notice it from.
